Open Meeting Notes
2/28/2010
Homewood Suites
Plano, Texas
Attendees: Sandi Wiemers (KS), Sharon Campbell (CA), Regina Moxley
(KS), Koralea Slagle (KS), Cyndy Higgerson(CA), Marlene Torres (TX),
Shawna Hart (OK), and Kristine Rodrigues (CA).
Background: Goal is to get NCAA membership. Need 20 colleges/club in
a conference. A club can be one person. On-campus sponsor is required.
Recommendation is to distance the club from the band. The difficulty
is
the club is open to all students.
The competition is judged by combining the USTA and NBTA score
sheets. These score sheets allow the captain scoring if so desired.
Six
judges from each organization are used throughout the competition.
Location: Concerned about the number of attendees in the Dallas location.
Recommended and agreed to have it in Kansas City, MO, piggy back it
with
the March Madness. March Madness will occur on Saturday, NCABT on
Sunday. Sandi will work on confirming the facility if available.
Banquet will be Saturday evening. Looking at March 5 – 6, 2011.
Club Status: There currently are between 8 – 12
clubs. Once a club always a club, even if it is inactive. Cyndy will
work on developing a list for the website of all “
clubs”.
Not sure if the twirler/athletes are aware of the benefits or advantages
of a club. Someone will look into developing a information sheet regarding
this information.
Current Goals: Bring the number up to have more college
compete against each other. Cyndy will make a listing of all colleges
who have attended in the
past and attempt to find out why they have not been returning.
Press: Reporter for the Fort Worth paper is working on a feature article
which
will print sometime this spring. Sandi will let us know when it goes
to
print.
Sandi will also connect with the twirlers who competed and let them
know
to get the word out to their local papers.
It was suggested that contest directors, coaches, need to make more
of
an effort to publicize their local events. The more news, the more
exposure, the more numbers.
Current Distribution: Flyer is distributed to over
1200 people. All major universities including the Big Ten. Notre Dame
requested to be to be removed from the distribution listing due to
their traditions.
Discussed a video on the website.
Misc. Topics: Discussed that the word needs to get out
that you don’t
have to twirl for your college or high school to participate in this
competition. If do not feel competitive enough, can compete in the rating
system – this
is the
system that high school twirlers are familiar with in the band reviews.
Discussed developing Facebook and Yahoo groups websites for mass
distribution of information. Kristine will look into how to develop
these
sites.
Will review and see if having a location far in advance affects the
attendance in this competition.
Do not want to forget last years suggestion of JV/Varsity divisions.
Once the numbers grow, can reconsider this idea.
Sharon knows a band director that knows how to use twirlers as a
part of
his program. She will connect with him and see what resources if
any he
has to share.
